To be competent as a nurse educator, the NLN’s first core competency they identify relates to facilitating learning. The associated tasks to facilitate learning include: utilizing theory-based teaching modalities appropriate for diverse learners that achieve desired outcomes; coaching students to develop critical thinking and clinical judgment; serving as a role model to the profession; recognizing the unique attributes of each student; and, inspiring and motivating learners (NLN, 2022).
Halstead (2007, p. 18) suggests nurse educators “Practice skilled oral, written, and electronic communication that reflects an awareness of self and others, along with an ability to convey ideas in a variety of contexts”. Yet, most of us have been lectured to and tend to adopt these old habits.
