Here you will find the tools you need to be successful in your new role as an academic nurse educator! By participating in this Virtual Community of Practice, I hope that you can establish quality connections in all facets of your role to make the transition from clinician to educator that much easier.

Some of you may remember the stress and uncertainty of starting out on the floor. Over time, you built connections, learned the tricks of the trade, and gained confidence. This should be no different, yet the research (along with the anecdotal evidence and personal experience) is telling us otherwise.

Our students, our patients, and our communities need amazing nurse educators to prepare the future nursing workforce, and I hope that this endeavor gives you the tools you need to be successful. When I speak about connections, I am referring to one another, your students, peers, clinical partners, and more!

Expectations

  • We are all equal and treat one another with respect. This is a safe place and there is no such thing as a stupid question! We are here to build one another up and learn the best ways to reach our students.
  • I am here for you! My role is to facilitate the group by providing guidance, some examples of best practices, and ultimately identifying what your needs are so that I can help you build your skillset and develop more confidence. For that to happen, I ask that you participate in a weekly meeting to check-in, debrief, discuss, and problem solve as you all see fit.
  • Contribute to discussions and share your accomplishments/suggestions/feedback! Did you create an escape room? How did it go? What could have been done differently?
  • Keep any discussions about specifics on confidential/sensitive issues within the group to protect the identity of our members.
  • Have fun! Build a convoy (safety in numbers, right?!), and function more efficiently to achieve that work-life balance.
  • During our first live meeting, we’ll address everyone’s expectations as a collective and lay the foundation for our group.
